TBS Nation,

Psalm 19:9-10 says, “The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever, the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”

Endurance is an interesting trait to think about especially considering our character trait of the month – Diligence.   Just because you run a race does not mean that you have great endurance. I am looking forward to the Olympics because of the stories of diligent training and endurance athletes prove. I have run many races but have failed at endurance because of a variety of issues.  First, not knowing the course can really cause endurance to quickly subside or even fail.  If I don’t know my finish point or have no landmarks to help encourage my progress my mind helps my legs find an excuse to stop running.  Second, lack of preparation causes endurance to fail. The simple lack of preparing and planning causes quick discouragement and early fatigue.  If there is proper preparation, the hard stretches are identified and tools are used to help navigate the tough period only to result in the hope of the easy stretch “right around the corner”. Finally, I find that endurance is harmed by the abundance of distractions along the journey.  How do you live life for Jesus and still function in everyday sinful society?  How do you focus on Heaven when I need to put bread on the table every week?  How do I live life without distractions …..?  I think you see the tension that exists here!  David says that the fear of the Lord is an enduring quality…it never is wrong, it never gets old, it never takes a wrong turn, it never causes unrighteousness or bitterness or greed, or hatred.  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and understanding says Solomon.  Oh do I need this fear to help me navigate through this life.  Oh do I need wisdom and understanding to help myself and others in turbulent water.  Oh do I need this enduring quality to sustain my endurance in this life race!

Hope this encourages you today….
